Success is defined differently for everyone. We all must decide what success means to us. However you define it, there are some things that successful people do and don’t do that can help us become successful in our personal lives and in our businesses.
In this Startup Q&A, I cover a few of those.
One of the most important is finding a mentor. Whether you’re just starting out of you’ve been around the block, finding a mentor is extremely valuable. It can save you time and money. Even highly successful people have mentors. Instead of “even” I would say “especially.”
As Ben Folds puts it, “There’s always someone cooler than you.” No matter how successful you are, there’s always someone you can learn from and improvements you can make.
The second most important factor is to visualize your success. Or as Stephen Covey said in the best-selling book, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” we should “start with the end in mind.” What does success look like to you? What do you want? Knowing where you’re going makes it much easier to get there. Or as the Cheshire Chat said in “Alice in Wonderland,” if you don’t know where you’re going, it doesn’t matter what path you choose.
Visualizing your perfect day is an effective way to break it down into manageable pieces. Knowing what your perfect day looks like helps keep you on track so you can focus on what’s important.
