When we’re working on a project or even just running errands, many of us make lists for all of our tasks. Sometimes a simple list is enough, but as we get into larger projects – especially when it comes to starting or running a business – a simple list just won’t do it.
Before we know it we have lists within lists, notes spread out everywhere, and an impossible mess that we feel like we’ll never get ahead of.
A lot of times this results in procrastination and/or abandoning the task altogether. The feeling of being overwhelmed demotivates us and stops us from taking action.
Our brain doesn’t process information in a linear fashion, which is why making a simple list is often ineffective for organizing our projects. In order to get our thoughts organized in a way that is more natural to the way our brain operates, we need to be able to ‘map’ out our ideas.
This is when a Mind Map is a great solution. It allows us to break down the monotonous information into a creative and logical diagram – one that we can easily visualize.
A mind map uses a graphical approach to allow you to build supporting ideas around one central subject as shown below.
There are a number of Mind Map tools out there that work very well. The one I use and love is called MindMeister, which allows up to 3 mind maps for free.
A mind map uses a non-linear graphical layout that allows the user to build an intuitive framework around a central concept. A mind map can turn long list of monotonous information into a colorful, memorable and highly organized diagram that works in line with your brain’s natural way of doing things.
As they say, what works for one doesn’t necessarily work for all. Everyone has different routines that work for them. I was skeptical of mind mapping at first, but the fact that I got to try it out for free (and the fact that my lists were getting out of control and causing me all sorts of anxiety) led me to give it a shot. As a result of using mind mapping, my productivity has definitely increased, as has my peace of mind knowing all my thoughts are organized.
