We all like data. Data are the numbers that tell us how we’re doing. However, not all data is created equal. Vanity metrics can be a distraction. So it’s important to focus on what matters and that’s what produces results.
Enter the KPI – Key Performance Indicator.
These are the numbers that tell the true picture of how our company is doing. Their nemesis are the vanity metrics. Vanity metrics help us feel good about ourselves and trick us into thinking we’re making progress.
Vanity metrics are numbers like followers, video views, shares and comments. To show you how your content is trending and what people are engaging with, they are very useful. However, obsessing over them is a waste of time and energy.
It’s common for them to even affect your mood. Got lots of likes? Oh, it’s going to be a good day. No likes? I better run to the store and get some ice cream to cheer me up. That’s not a good way to live.
We all enjoy getting “likes” and follows when we post content, but do they truly indicate progress? Probably not. That’s why they’re called vanity metrics. Tracking them can be largely a waste of time.
So what numbers should you track? What should be your KPIs? Watch below and post what you’re tracking.
